Nostalgic for the future

With Hong Kong’s burgeoning independent music scene, big indie events are starting to draw larger names and increasing attention. HKU’s Students’ Union Music Club’s annual Nostalgia gig is one such show. The event features three acts: two prominent Hong Kong groups, plus a headliner hailing from Japan.

Thud (pictured) and Prune Deer are the two local acts and they’re some of the city’s fastest-rising indie groups. Thud, who secured the opening slot at Clockenflap 2014 on the strength of their debut single alone, have since released the Floret EP, caught the attention of UK music mag NME and grace gig after gig with their signature dreamy, synth-rock sound. Prune Deer, though only having released their debut album Solid Transparency in 2015, have been making an impression on rock fans for much longer. Since 2013 they’ve played a clean, ethereal kind of post-rock, but are much more stripped down in terms of their sound design compared to Thud.

Of special note is Japanese band A Picture of Her. The indie outfit is legging it here just for this performance, and is maybe, just maybe, a sign that Hong Kong’s indie scene is beginning to exert a pull on the region. A Picture of Her have a clutch of different releases to their name and feature a signature driving groove and clean, minimalist guitar. Their mash up of math, post and indie rock should go down well with Hongkongers who typically lap up such genres.

The collective talent of the three groups should make the evening an awesome one. Advanced tickets are on sale at four different locations: Zuk Studio’s two branches, Zoo Records and White Noise Records (see below). Walk-in tickets will also be available too, so there’s no excuse not to back the continuing growth of local music. Josiah Ng
