Whimsical pop professional

You’ve heard of Mika. Everyone’s heard of Mika, right? He’s the guy who according to Grace Kelly could be brown, blue, violet sky. He could be hurtful, purple and anything that you like. That’s Mika.

Assuring us that he’s fully recovered from the illness that made him cancel shows across Asia last summer, Mika finally returns to our shores to perform an intimate gig for his fans. The Vine should play host to an electric show featuring the hits that made Mika a global star, as well as tracks from his critically acclaimed new album, No Place in Heaven (inconvenient for The Vine, perhaps, which doubles as a church).

A true international star, Mika isn’t just the latest overhyped product of a reality TV series like The X Factor or the typically ebullient praise of the British music press. His first two albums – Life in Cartoon Motion and The Boy Who Knew Too Much – were hits in his adopted home, Britain. But thanks to his fluency in French – he spent time growing up in Paris – Mika has become a sensation in the Francophone world and its aficionados courtesy of his French-language track, Elle Me Dit, which topped the charts in France and Belgium. Success led to a slot as a judge on France’s rendition of The Voice, where he coached the winner in his first season as a judge. Three years after his last album, No Place in Heaven landed last year, to another wave of positive reviews and high positions in charts across Europe, demonstrating that the whimsical pop star has barely lost a beat.

Those in attendance can see for themselves Mika’s world renowned ability to hit the high notes, which when attempted at karaoke are the cause of many laughs and much embarrassment. Anyone who fails to get a ticket should note that Mika plays just across the border in Shenzhen on February 23 – it’s a long trek but worth it to dance your way back home. Krshna Moriani
